Something to think about on Tax Day 2002... As most of you realize, it is not likely we are going to abolish the income tax with a war budget pushing 400 billion dollars a year (including latest for war on terrorism and hidden budget items). That's $1500 a year per American or maybe $3000 odd per tax payer. A true defense for just the United States would probably cost less than $50 billion a year, something more easily paid for without an income tax or any new taxes. How can the Libertarian Party accomplish abolishing the Income Tax unless we work just as hard to End US Military Intervention which is what the other $350 billion a year pays for. The Libertarian National Committee has decided to make the War on Drugs the Libertarian Party's signature issue. Is this something delegates at a Libertarian Convention, or LP state committees would vote to endorse? It is a worthy issue, but is it the biggest and most important issue the LP could focus on?? After September 11, all libertarians and all conscious Americans have to question US Military Interventionism. Should ending Military Intervention become the Libertarian Party's highest priority? Those of us who started Libertarians for Peace certainly think it should be. IF YOU AGREE: ** Make sure you sign our Petition for a Strong LP Statement on Non-Interventionism. http://www.PetitionOnline.com/libs4p77/petition.html We're stabilized at 218 signatures because we haven't advertised in a week, so please try to sign now, if you have been meaning to do so. This is a draft statement. The point of our final statement, which we will try to have passed at the 2002 Convention, *could be* something like: "The Libertarian Party will make ending US military intervention, especially U.S. Out of the Middle East, it's signature issue and tie that issue to abolition of the Income Tax." We will be meeting during the convention to finalize the language of our resolution. ** Consider running for the Libertarian National Committee. There are still too many Hawks on the Committee (and a few hawks running for the first time for the National Committee) who, whether or not they admit it freely, support a high level of military activity overseas for quite a few years -- something that ensures we will have to continue to suffer an income tax. (We are working on a Libertarians4Peace questionnaire to find out just where these LNC candidates really stand on these issues.) ** Consider running for US Representative or Senator from your state and making Military Non-Intervention your main issue. We can put you on our candidates page. See current list of candidates: http://www.libertarians4peace.net under Candidates section. ** If you are a strict non-interventionist interested in organizing the above join our Organizing List Organize-Libs4peace-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/organize-libs4peace General Discussion for those who more generally agree is at Libs4peace-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/libs4peace ** Learn more about the LP's non-interventionist views by reading the LP platform, checking out good antiwar libertarian sites, doing internet searches on topics of interest to you.
